Agnes G. Harrison Garden
On the south side of Dodona, across from the living room and stone patio is a large kidney shaped flower bed named in honor of Agnes G. Harrison. In the center of the bed is a large male Osage Orange tree. The bed contains azaleas, hydrangeas, American boxwoods, a Japanese Quince bush, a Kentucky Coffeetree, and many flowers including vinca, yuccas, and daylilies.
Agnes was an avid and skilled horticulturalist and was the inspiration behind many gardening projects including the restoration of the gardens at Oatlands Plantation. She founded Keep Loudoun Beautiful in 1970 and served as its president for over a decade. She was a member of several garden clubs, including the Leesburg Garden Club, the Fauquier and the Loudoun Garden Club, and the Garden Club of Virginia. She received a Garden Club of America Conservation Award in 1976. Agnes was also heavily involved with B. Powell in the efforts to purchase and restore Dodona and its grounds.
The photos above show the garden in early spring. On the left (top) are two large hydrangeas. In the middle is a picture of the Japanese Quince in bloom. In both pictures, you can see the furrowed orange bark of the Osage Orange tree. In the photo on the right (bottom) is the Kentucky Coffeetree surrounded by naked lady flowers and aconite ground cover.
